A homeowner in Texas found a hand grenade hidden in the walls of their new home after beginning a renovation project over the holidays.

The White Settlement Police Department responded to the call from the perplexed homeowner and evacuated the area.

The Fort Worth Fire Department Arson and Bomb Investigations team then arrived and determined that the grenade, thankfully, did not contain explosive materials.

Neighbors were quickly allowed back into the area to go about their New Year's Eve celebrations.

The White Settlement Police Department shared the story and photos of the grenade on their Facebook page:

We responded to a call at 4:02 pm in the 9200 block of Lanham Street on Sunday, December 31, 2023. The house had been under renovation and the new owner located what appeared to be a military-style hand grenade. Out of an abundance of caution, nearby residents immediately adjacent to the property were evacuated. The Fort Worth Fire Department Arson and Bomb investigations team arrived and made the device safe. It was determined by their team that the grenade did not contain any explosive material. The device was taken by Fort Forth Fire. All neighbors are now allowed back into the area.

It's not clear why the previous owners would hide a grenade in the walls of their home (or the cutlery drawer as it's shown in the pictures), but upon looking at the pictures of the decrepit house, I could make a few guesses.

I hope the new homeowner got a bargain, but at the very least he did get a neat souvenir and a great story to tell.
