Do the Brits not watch American movies?
I'm serious about this because 20 years ago, we literally made a dystopian movie about the dangers of creating a homicide prediction program.
Yet, the British government has gone and created a dystopian homicide prediction program.
The existence of the program was discovered by an overwatch government group called Statewatch while they were reviewing Freedom of Information documents.
The Ministry of Justice acknowledged the existence of the predictive program:
The MOJ says the scheme will 'review offender characteristics that increase the risk of committing homicide' and 'explore alternative and innovative data science techniques for risk assessment of homicide'.
The project will 'provide evidence towards improving risk assessment of serious crime, and ultimately contribute to protecting the public via better analysis,' a spokesperson added.
The program uses information like names, dates of birth, gender, ethnicity, if and when they were victimized by a crime, the age at which they first had contact with the police, mental health status, addictions, suicide potential, vulnerabilities, self-harm, disabilities, and a number that identifies people on the police national computer.
Of course, the wokies in Britain aren't upset about the program's existence per se; they're only upset that it might predict murderers who aren't white males.
This latest model, which uses data from our institutionally racist police and Home Office, will reinforce and magnify the structural discrimination underpinning the criminal legal system.
Like other systems of its kind, it will code in bias towards racialized and low-income communities.
In other words, they think the Brits' real-life Minority Report will be a minority report so they are going to "DEI" it so the system identifies white guys.
