A shocking ending to a bizarre multi-state manhunt:
A weeks-long manhunt for fugitive Roy McGrath ended Monday evening with the former Maryland official shot dead in an encounter with law enforcement agents in Tennessee, according to McGrath's lawyer.
McGrath, you may remember, was facing federal fraud charges over his alleged unlawful receipt of $233,000 when he left the Maryland Environmental Service in order to work for Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan.
Indicted in October of 2021, he faced up to a century in prison for his crimes. His failure to appear in federal court last month set off the FBI manhunt.
Whether or not McGrath actually engaged in a shootout with federal agents is unclear:
"The FBI takes all shooting incidents involving our agents or task force members seriously," the FBI said in a statement. "In accordance with FBI policy, the shooting incident is under investigation by the FBI's Inspection Division."
McGrath himself, his lawyer told media, "never wavered about his innocence."
