A recent study reveals that the moon has shrunk by more than 150 feet in circumference, a phenomenon akin to a grape wrinkling into a raisin.
All of us upon learning that the moon is in fact getting smaller:
The moon's shrinking size "is attributed to the cooling of [its] core." And since "the moon's surface is brittle" we're seeing the formation of "faults where crustal sections collide."
The researchers say the shrinkage could have implications for future moon landings:
The potential of strong seismic events from active thrust faults should be considered when preparing and locating permanent outposts and pose a possible hazard to future robotic and human exploration of the south polar region.
