Uh-oh, you guys, Marine Le Pen and her National Rally have taken the lead in the first round of France's legislative elections called by President Macron, and boy oh boy are the lefties upset about it.
Marked by high turnout of nearly 68%, voters handed Marine Le Pen's National Rally party a strong lead on Sunday, with about 33% of the vote. The New Popular Front, a leftist alliance, finished second with about 28%. President Emmanuel Macron's centrist group came third with around 20%, according to figures released by the Interior Ministry …
The left-wing coalition now says it will withdraw its candidates in districts where they finished third in order to support other candidates opposed to the right. Macron's centrist alliance also said some of its candidates would step down before the July 7's decisive runoff elections to try to block the National Rally party.
I am completely shocked that Macron and his party finished so poorly in these elections that he himself called. Completely shocked. I guess when you're wildly unpopular you just don't win elections. That's just politics.
This is just the first round of ballots, so we'll see how much steam the National Rally picks up in round two (July 7). As expected, however, the Lefties came out in droves to "peacefully protest" the election results.
Peaceful protests are making a comeback in 2024 I see. A sign of things to come in America? We'll have to wait and see.
Here's what happens if Le Pen's party wins enough votes in the assembly.
Le Pen called on her supporters and voters that didn't back her party in the first round to push it over the line and give it a commanding legislative majority. In that scenario, Le Pen's 28-year-old protege, Jordan Bardella, would become prime minister. Macron, who has said he will not step down before his term expires in 2027, would be forced into an awkward power-sharing arrangement called 'cohabitation' in France …
Some polling agency projections indicated that in the best-case scenario for the far right, the National Rally and its allies could collectively clear the bar of 289 seats needed for a secure majority in the 577-seat National Assembly.
Expect things to get even more mostly peaceful in France if this scenario plays out.
Because in 2024, insurrection is so back!
