"Outsourcing" is generally a four-letter word in the American socio-political landscape. Most times when an institution "outsources" something, it means they're trying to cut corners, pinch pennies and skimp on quality.
In this case, however....
A Florida sheriff is drawing attention after encouraging homeowners to shoot intruders in order to save taxpayers money.
The comments came after a burglary spree in Pace, Florida, in which a man is accused of breaking into multiple homes and backyards as he ran from deputies.
Santa Rosa County Sheriff Bob Johnson said one homeowner shot at the man during the burglary spree but missed. He encouraged homeowners to use lethal force during break-ins to "save taxpayers money."
Yeah that's... that's one way to save money, I guess. I mean if you're really scraping the bottom of the barrel and raiding all your rainy day funds.
...then I guess "shoot burglars to save on administrative costs" is a good plan.
This sheriff was being a bit tongue-and-cheek (kinda). Here are his actual words:
If somebody's breaking into your house, you're more than welcome to shoot them in Santa Rosa County, and we prefer that you do actually. Whoever that was, you're not in trouble. Come see us. We have a gun safety class we put on every other Saturday. If you take that, you'll shoot a lot better, and hopefully, you'll save taxpayers money.
I mean, look, you have the right to use force, including lethal force, to defend your family and homestead, and you should avail yourself of that right as you see fit. No doubts there. The suspect here was finally apprehended by police in someone's bedroom and he's lucky to be alive.
That being said, "saving money on the budget" doesn't seem like the best reason to shoot a guy.
I don't know. Maybe I'm old-fashioned. Maybe I'm just an outlaw named Jesse James who would rather have the upper hand on unsuspecting civilians!
