The U.S. Air Force finally met its recruitment goals. Here’s how they did it.

I've got good news, and I've got bad news.

The good news is the U.S. Air Force is finally on target to reach their targeted recruitment numbers just in case we actually end up in World War III.

That's right!

The Air Force has managed to convince 25,000 people to sign up for service this year so far.

'It wasn't any one thing,' Brig. Gen. Christopher Amrhein said. 'It was a lot of levers being worked in combination with each other, which really gave our recruiters the tools they needed … to find the talent to come into our service.'

The bad news is that the tools they gave their recruiters were were just, well, lower standards across the board.

Body fat requirements were raised from 20% to 26% for men and from 28% to 36% for women.

The top age of enlistment has also been kicked all the way up from 39 to 42.

It doesn't seem like a lot, but consider how many people end up needing reading glasses in their early 40s.

And finally, the Air Force increased the availability of medical waivers.

Prior to Genesis, the Air Force reviewed about 10,000 medical waiver requests per year, according to Amrhein, who said that by comparison, 'we're just over 23,000 for this year alone.'

23,000?

That's almost everyone they recruited!

It doesn't sound great, but let's not forget who won the day when the aliens invaded in Independence Day.

I'm just going to pretend all these new recruits are Russell Casse, and everything will be okay.
