It's only been a few days since Wendy Washik hit the news for being charged with criminal assault for getting her neighbor wet during a water gun fight with some neighborhood kids. π
She set up a GoFundMe to help cover legal costs.
Big Mistake!
Here's what that page looks like now.
GoFundMe is refusing to let her raise money to help cover the costs for legal fees (she's also been suspended from work because of course).
'We were up to about $12,000 and GoFundMe contacted me saying that, because it was technically a criminal charge, they were shutting [the campaign] down,' Randi Washik said.
THIS LADY ACCIDENTALLY SPRAYED A NEIGHBOR WITH A TOY WATER GUN AND SHE CAN'T RAISE MONEY FOR HER CRIMINAL DEFENSE!!
They did manage to transfer some of the money before it got shut down.
GoFundMe's policy states that they do not fund ...
... legal defenses of financial and violent crimes, including those related to money laundering, murder, robbery, assault, battery, sex crimes or crimes against minors;
But they do not seem to apply that policy uniformly.
Consider the GoFundMe campaigns for legal defense for people like Quindarius Zachary, who was charged for committing a drive-by shooting targeting members of a rival gang in Atlanta.
It's been up and running for a while with some news coverage in the mainstream media.
Zachary used a real gun, Washik a water gun, but GoFundMe only canceled one of their legal defense funds.
Weird.
Anyway, water-gun mom has moved her crowdfunding to GiveSendGo if you were hoping to support her in the madness that is the Canadian justice system.
