Five University of Georgia students were traveling to Savannah for a girl's trip over the weekend when they came across a minivan submerged in a creek.

The girls say they weren't sure exactly what happened, but they saw what looked like a flash of white light and a cloud of dust as they approached a bridge crossing Brier Creek in Sardis, Georgia.

They immediately pulled off to see what happened, and at that point saw the minivan in the water and the mom who had been driving, come up to the surface.

The five girls jumped into action to rescue the two children who were still trapped in the van. After four minutes, they were able to get both of the children out, with the younger child (a four-year-old boy) requiring CPR.

One of the girls, Clarke Jones, was a lifeguard and knew what to do in this situation.

Jones told FOX 5,

You kind of expect to never have to use it. It's just a worst-case situation. Especially to do it outside of when I lifeguarded too, I never expected.

After a minute, the four-year-old responded to CPR.

"It was so surreal," Jones sadi. "I mean the mom just went and picked up her child, and we all just kind of looked at each other, and instantly started sobbing."

The five sorority sisters say they are grateful they were in the right place at the right time.

They even took a long detour that put them on this road at just the right time to witness the crash.
