Shirley and Emma Jean Roberson were married in Greenville, Alabama, on Dec. 14, 1947, at their home, which was given to them as a wedding present.
76 years later, the couple is still married and still living in that same home.
Emma Jean told WSFA,
We feel like we've been married all our lives, and we almost have.
She's not joking either! When they were married, Shirley was 19 and his bride Emma Jean was 17 years old. The two had met at a Methodist Youth Fellowship meeting in town, and Shirley asked Emma Jean to see a movie with him soon after.
Neither of them remembers what the movie was, but Shirley remembered that Emma Jean had to "call and ask her momma." Obviously, her mom said she could go.
The couple never had children of their own, but devoted their life to serving in their local church.
Emma Jean said that,
We worked with young people, and I loved older people in the church. We did everything we could to serve the Lord. That was our goal in life.
Shirley said that the secret to both their long lives and long marriage is simply,
Loving God and loving each other. We have tried to do what was right and what was pleasing to the Lord Jesus Christ to the best of our ability.
Now that's some advice we could all use!
