From the "yes, these are really the people elected to lead us" file, one Democratic congresswoman proposed one of the more laughable gender-based theories on recent record.
In a Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade subcommittee hearing on Wednesday, Representative Jan Schakowsky of Illinois suggested (out loud, in front of people) that perhaps fewer women pursue manufacturing jobs because "manufacturing" has the word "man" in it.
Yesterday, I met with a manufacturing company, but they also are engaged in getting young people more engaged in manufacturing. So, I asked them, so, how many of those students that are signing up and want to do this? How many are women?
She was reportedly told it was 13%.
It was a low number. And you had mentioned trying to engage more women in manufacturing. I'm just wondering if just the name manufacturing sounds like a guy.
Yes, this is an actual hypothesis offered up by a sitting member of the United States Congress.
(We really do have our best and brightest in positions of leadership, don't we?)
To understand the sheer levels of ignorance at play, "manufacturing" comes from the Latin manus for "hands" and factura, meaning "work." This is why a "manicure" involves hands (I notice men don't usually get those!).
Meanwhile, the word "man" is Germanic and has no association.
Schakowsky's suggestion quickly (and justifiably) became a source of amazement.
With this level of intellect, one can only imagine how someone like Jan Schakowsky must have womanipulated Illinois voters and womanaged to receive a womandate to serve in Congress.
Lord, please save us from our imbecilic leaders.
Amen …
… and awomen.
