This Harvard Magazine article from 22 years ago explains so much

We see the insane, demented antics of present-day college students and we think to ourselves: "These kids. College wasn't like that when I went in the early 2000s."

But we're wrong about that. The seeds, at least, were already being planted even that far back. And we have the receipts:

The 2002 article can be read here, and it's exactly as stupid as you think it is:

The goal of abolishing the white race is on its face so desirable that some may find it hard to believe that it could incur any opposition other than from committed white supremacists. Of course we expected bewilderment from people who still think of race as biology. We frequently get letters accusing us of being "racists," just like the KKK, and have even been called a "hate group." ...

Ivy League intellectuals writing about "the goal of abolishing the white race" like:

Don't worry, though, when they say "abolish the white race," they're not flirting with pseudo-violent racialist language that could very easily lead to serious injury and harm being inflicted upon innocent people. They're just saying, um, well, like:

Our standard response is to draw an analogy with anti-royalism: to oppose monarchy does not mean killing the king; it means getting rid of crowns, thrones, royal titles...

Uh huh. The French Revolution would like a word with you:

It turns out that when people speak of "abolishing" a thing, they often mean, you know, abolishing it! It happens!

Thankfully the academy, despite its best efforts, hasn't gotten around to destroying anyone or anything over the last two decades. But they were trying, all the way back then, and they were not being shy about it:

The editors meant it when they replied to a reader, "Make no mistake about it: we intend to keep bashing the dead white males, and the live ones, and the females too, until the social construct known as 'the white race' is destroyed โ€” not 'deconstructed' but destroyed."

Twenty years later they're still at it. We can't say we weren't warned!
