This is a scene from the inaugural Balloon World Cup. Yes, keeping a balloon from touching the ground now has a World Cup

You may remember a few months ago we showed you what we thought to be the top sports highlight of the year. That highlight simply showed two dudes in a living room keeping a balloon from touching the ground. It was great.

But check this out:

"Inaugural Balloon World Cup"?!?!?

No. No you didn't, Spain. No you didn't.

Inspired by a series of viral videos and organized by Barcelona soccer player Gerard Pique and internet celebrity Ibai Llanos, the inaugural Balloon World Cup took place in Tarragona [Spain] on Thursday...

The rules of the game are simple. Players have to hit the balloon in an upward direction and they score points if their opponent fails to prevent it from touching the ground.

The game was played "on a 8x8 meter court littered with living room furniture" and a bunch of other stuff you might randomly find around your home.

Here's a highlight from the Balloon World Cup (I can't believe I'm writing that):

Listen to how excited these men are!

Out of this world!

And do you wanna know something?

Those two dudes from that original video I linked to above—our sports highlight of the year—THEY WERE IN THE TOURNAMENT!!

Teams from 32 countries took part including an American team of Antonio and Diego Arredondo, whose videos of the game they played with their sister, Isabel, at home in Oregon were a huge hit on social media and inspired the tournament.

AMAZING!!

Good for those guys.

And the winner of the first-ever Balloon World Cup:

Francesco De La Cruz emerged as the first champion after beating German Jan Spiess 6-2 in the final on a 8x8 meter court littered with living room furniture as well as a small car.

Congrats, Francesco!

(That's him in the video, by the way.)
