This Portland homeless man's 'house' is fancier than your home

Over the past year, a man who identified himself only as Mikey has constructed a two-story wooden compound complete with a kitchen, multiple bedrooms, and even a walk-in-closet. And it's way nicer than your house. That is until it was discovered by Portland authorities.

He had all the amenities including vinyl windows, solar power, and a doorbell. The only thing it lacked was running water. "It is like normal living without plumbing," Mikey said.

Portland's Homeless and Urban Camping Impact Reduction Program discovered, demolished, and removed 31 tons of stuff over six days, filling eight 30-yard dumpsters. They said it was the largest single homeless structure they've ever cleared.

When asked why he built it, Mikey just said, "Somewhere to live. I hate tents."

Mikey had an eye for detail, and there were some really great touches. For example, his two rooftop decks (!) were reachable by a staircase made from wooden wire spools.

The total home size was estimated at a whopping 2,500 square feet. And, ever safety-conscious, Mikey even had fire extinguishers placed throughout.

You'd think Mikey would have been angry that his home was being taken away but he took it all in stride. He even praised the Rapid Response workers for their patience with him.
