Called a "superior mirage," the illusion happens when warm air above denser cold air bends the light reflecting off an object through the atmosphere.
As someone who grew up near a large body of water, I can tell you that illusions are pretty freaky, but I've never seen anything quite as insane as this in broad daylight!
