There was a brutal scene in Charlotte on Monday as four law enforcement officers were killed, including a U.S. Marshal, and four more were injured while serving a warrant in Charlotte, North Carolina.
A total of eight law enforcement officers were shot during the incident, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Johnny Jennings said at a Monday evening news conference. He described the shooting as "the most tragic one" he had been involved with in his 32-year-long law enforcement career.
The suspect at the scene was a convicted felon who was receiving the warrant for being in possession of a firearm. He has been identified as Terry Clark Hughes, Jr., a man with a lengthy criminal past.
Police were "met with gunfire from a 'high-powered rifle' and returned fire," killing Hughes, though not before he wounded 8 officers, killing 4.
Footage of the incident shows a scene of chaos and heavy cop presence:
Police were utilizing the whole neighborhood in an attempt to surround and neutralize the shooter:
The U.S. Marshal killed in the shooting has not yet been identified. The North Carolina corrections officers, meanwhile, have been identified at Sam Poloche and Alden Elliott, both of whom leave behind families with children.
Also killed was Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Dept. Officer Joshua Eyer, who leaves behind a wife and son.
