So the government of Ontario did a thing:
Oops.
More background from The Hill:
Trump in August announced a 35 percent tariff on all Canadian goods, though products covered under the 2020 U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade agreement were exempt.
Canada is one of the United States' top trading partners, and their economies are heavily intertwined when it comes to certain products. But Trump has repeatedly argued the U.S. does not need Canadian goods, and that Canada is far more reliant on America for its economy.
The ad in question, pieced together from a 1987 radio address made by then-President Ronald Reagan, attempts to make an argument against trade tariffs like the ones imposed by Trump.
The problem? It's allegedly a misrepresentation, according to the Ronald Reagan Foundation.
According to the Daily Mail, though clever, the ad may not end up providing the desired result.
The advertisement was part of a $53.5 million campaign by Ontario Premier Doug Ford to inform Americans about the negative effects tariffs can have on their everyday lives.
Instead, the ad may have opened up a can of legal worms and royally ticked off President Trump.
At the very least, it has resulted in Trump breaking off all trade negotiations.
Well done, America's Hat.
