This week, crews began demolishing parts of the White House's East Wing in preparation for the construction of the new ballroom commissioned by President Trump.
While President Trump had announced his vision to renovate the ballroom months ago, those plans became a reality on Monday, as heavy equipment arrived to chop away at sections of the White House.
The project is entirely privately funded. Here is what the ballroom will look like when finished:
The New York Post detailed the part of the historical structure that would be affected:
The East Wing, constructed in its current form in 1942, with a single-story predecessor dating to 1902, is one of the newest parts of the White House complex.
The wing historically has housed the first lady's offices and sits atop a bomb shelter.
Trump is significantly lengthening the East Wing to the south to accommodate the new ballroom — with a number of trees already chopped down to make way for the addition.
Democrats, of course, were outraged by Trump's project, crying out about the president's audacity.
Unfortunately, none of them know their history.
So, for those keeping score at home:
Basketball court paid for by taxpayers: Totally cool.
Ballroom paid for without any taxpayer dollars: Really, really horrible and evil.
Got it?
