President-elect Donald Trump is proposing the first overseas U.S. acquisition since the Marshall Islands:
I am pleased to announce Ken Howery as my choice for United States Ambassador to the Kingdom of Denmark. Ken is a World renowned entrepreneur, investor, and public servant, who served our Nation brilliantly during my First Term as U.S. Ambassador to Sweden, where he led efforts to increase Defense, Security, and Economic Cooperation between our Countries. As a Co-Founder of PayPal and venture capital fund, Founders Fund, Ken turned American Innovation and Tech leadership into Global success stories, and that experience will be invaluable in representing us abroad. For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity. Ken will do a wonderful job in representing the interests of the United States. Thank you Ken, and congratulations!
This isn't a joke. The Wikipedia page on "Proposals for the United States to purchase Greenland," for instance, has been under furious revision for much of this morning:
It's worth stressing that the question of the U.S. purchasing Greenland has been debated for many centuries. It's not exactly a new proposal. But it's definitely a hobby-horse for Trump himself, and with the man unchained from a re-election campaign, he really might feel bold enough to go for it.
Greenland, meanwhile, would like Trump to know that it is not thrilled with the prospect:
'Greenland is ours. We are not for sale and will never be for sale. We must not lose our long struggle for freedom,' the island's Prime Minister Mute Egede said in a written comment.
Me: [Laughs in American]
Maybe the PM of Denmark didn't see Trump's post to the president of Panama on Sunday night:
(Yes, we're taking back the Panama Canal too!)
A few reactions:
How much you wanna bet that within 18 months Trump is going to be walking into Greenland like:
