AnhPhu Nguyen and Caine Ardayfio, who are engineering students at [Harvard], posted a chilling video demonstration of their program, dubbed I-XRAY to X on Monday ...
The I-XRAY program works by uploading the footage from the glasses to PimEyes, a facial recognition tool that uses AI to match a recorded face to any publicly available images on the internet.
I-XRAY then prompts another AI tool to scour public databases to retrieve personal details about the individual in the image, including their name, address, phone number, and even information about relatives.
This information is then sent to the I-XRAY mobile app.
Understand, these glasses don't look very bulky or suspicious. You might never notice them.
Think about the applications for this.
Someone who wanted to steal your identify only needs to look at you in public. If they went the extra mile and talked to you after looking up your data, they could even get a voice recording that could be uploaded to an AI service and replicated.
Imagine a stranger coming up to you with intimate details about your work history, family weddings, past vacations, and friends!
Beyond identity thieves, the tech could be used for even more evil purposes. A predator could choose his victim out of a crowd and get to her house before she's even home.
A robber or a kidnapper could scope out the richest targets from a park bench.
Government agents could screen public spaces for people guilty of thoughtcrime.
And if you were able to hack into a bunch of those cameras at the same time, just imagine what kinds of mass surveillance you could conduct (our current personal spy devices tend to stay in our pockets or bags for most of the day).
And yet, the new Gen-Z-upgraded Mark Zuckerberg says these glasses will be the norm by 2030.
