Uncovered emails show how Georgia mayor and sheriff discussed the murder of Laken Riley and the city's "sanctuary" status

Remember Kelly Girtz, the Democrat mayor of Athens, Georgia, who said that even though Laken Riley was murdered by an illegal that we shouldn't connect it to the border crisis?

Well, given what he said in public, it's not a huge shock what he said in private.

Look at the way Laken's death and the attacker are discussed (or not discussed) in these emails (screenshots follow the tweets below):

The sheriff wasn't even clear on the city's policy. He wanted to know if the city actually had sanctuary status and seemed to be concerned about maintaining "professionalism" as his highest priority:

Is this the posture of the Clarke County Sheriff's Office?

This is how Mayor Girtz responded:

A young woman was murdered by an illegal and he's immediately spouting off links to contested research to throw his own countrymen under the bus?

"My neighbors are bigger criminals than the stranger who is here illegally" is a weird take.

That's the woke attitude toward crime, for ya, I guess.

Mayor Girtz sought to make the whole thing about "comfort and unity," straight out of the PR handbook, and avoid talking politics. If you remember the press conference, he couldn't help but drop his own political opinions throughout and shield his party from criticism about the open border.

Maybe you think his response was mature and measured.

But I recall a certain criminal in Minnesota who died while police were arresting him and every progressive politician in the country was stoking a race war that burned cities down. Why do the deaths of serial criminals like George Floyd cause nationwide outrage while we "avoid talking politics" when an innocent young woman was murdered?

Something to think about.

Here is the link to the full email exchange, it's just two pages long.
