This mailman thought he'd be eating good for quite some time, but then he got pulled over.
The stolen checks were in the mailman's lunchbox.
A Knox County patrol deputy conducted a traffic stop along Clinton Highway on the afternoon of October 5 and detected an odor of marijuana, according to a sheriff's office spokesperson. The front seat passenger, identified as Dontray Ligon, stated that the car belonged to him and allowed deputies to search it.
Two large lunchboxes containing check-related mail that investigators believe to be stolen were found during the search. The sheriff's office spokesperson said Wednesday that the stolen checks amounted to $972,051.63 and multiple victims have been linked to the recovered mail.
Dontray Ligon was employed as a United States postal worker. He's facing down charges for theft and mail theft of $250,000 or more.
Yes, a pothead mailman allegedly snuck checks out of the mail and into his lunchbox in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Here's more from another Knoxville station:
A spokesperson with the USPS told WVLT News the agency is investigating the matter and that Ligon is 'currently not working for the USPS.' The representative went on to say, 'The USPS OIG considers the allegations of theft of U.S. Mail by any Postal Service employee to be a very serious issue. When such allegations are made, USPS OIG special agents vigorously investigate those allegations.'
I know one mail man who would love to get a crack at this case ...
