Ever wondered what it would sound like if 374 people rocked out on the bagpipes all at once?
Wonder no longer as bagpipers gathered in Melbourne to break the world record of number of bagpipes played simultaneously to the tune of AC/DC's "It's a Long Way to the Top."
According to the AP, the event was billed as "The Great Melbourne Bagpipe Bash" and took place in Melbourne's Federation Square, on Swanston Street.
[Swanston Street] was the scene of the Australian hard rock band's 1976 film clip in which they played the hit on the back of a flatbed truck traveling slowly through downtown traffic with music blaring from speakers.
If you're not familiar with that video, here it is:
Interestingly, the crowd of 374 bagpipers included Les Kenfield and Kevin Conlon:
Two of the three members of Rats of Tobruk Memorial Pipes and Drums who played with AC/DC on the truck 49 years ago.
‘It didn't strike you at the time how big this event is until now,' Kenfield told Australian Broadcasting Corp. ‘Now it's one of the greatest things — probably the greatest thing I've ever done in my life.'
The crowd also included a 98-year-old bagpipe player named Bruce.
At the end, the bagpipers played Happy Birthday to Scottish actor Gerard Butler, who had flown in to attend the event, and then they launched into an impromptu Amazing Grace, which arguably is the best song that can be played on the bagpipes.
But maybe not by 374 bagpipes all in different keys.
