Well, I hate to bring you the biggest and most depressing black pill you could possibly be delivered today, but this is depressing.
This 10th grade teacher posted this video (with more than 650,000 views and 140,000 likes on TikTok in 24 hours) talking about how she's quitting her job because the kids today just do not care about learning.
This will not be my classroom after Friday, I am actually leaving the profession ...
What I really wanna talk about is how technology is ruining education.
This girl isn't exactly an older teacher whose railing about "kids these days" and how things were better in her day.
She was born in 1999.
She's currently a 10th-grade English teacher at a public high school.
A lot of these kids don't know how to read because they have had things read to them or they can click a button and have things read out loud to them in seconds ... everything is high stimulation ... they can't sit still for very long ...
If I ask a child to handwrite something, even just a paragraph - five sentences - basic paragraph, they roll their eyes, they throw tantrums - I'm talking about high schoolers, I teach tenth grade now - they get really, really unruly. And because I'm young, too, they wanna argue with me about it and they say, "Why can't we just type it? Why can't we just type it?"
Well, it's because you'll go on another website, or you'll just copy it, or you'll use AI, you'll use ChatGPT.
