Do you remember this story from last year?
Shannon Brandt, 41, purposely mowed down 18-year-old Cayler Ellingson with his car while Ellingson was walking home one night. After following Ellingson (to the point where the teen frantically called his mom for help), Brandt hit the teen once to knock him over, then reportedly drove back and forth over his legs and torso to squish him like a bug.
Why?
Because Ellingson was a conservative and Brandt considered him a "Republican extremist." Brandt, who was drunk the night in question, had argued with Ellingson at a street party prior to running the kid over.
When Brandt was arrested, he was confused. He told authorities he didn't understand why he was being jailed for killing an extremist.
Now, less than a year later, this woman is allowing Brandt to get off with only manslaughter:
More from The Post Millennial:
Shannon Brandt, 42, has reportedly entered a guilty plea of manslaughter after running down teenager Cayler Ellingson with his vehicle on September 18, 2022. Though he was initially brought up on a Class AA felony murder charge, he recently entered a plea agreement with the Foster County State's Attorney Kara E Brinster, with the approval of Southeast Judicial District Judge Bradley Cruff, per News Dakota.
Brinster stated that the only charge which was dropped was leaving the scene of the crime, but Brandt still faces up to ten years in prison for the horrific incident.
Brinster noted that a pre-sentence investigation had been ordered by the court, and Brandt is to remain on bond "pending sentencing at a later date." Brandt has also been put under house arrest, waiting for official sentencing.
Brandt's lawyer, meanwhile, is celebrating the downgrade in charges, saying "this tragedy was an accident."
One problem with that: Brandt admitted to doing it on purpose as a hate crime when HE called 911 to report the crime.
No reason for the change in the charges has been given.
I'll leave you with this quote from President Trump, who asked what would happen if the political views were switched:
