Margaret Brennan said the Holocaust happened because "free speech was weaponized." Watch Marco Rubio call out her trash for what it was.

Margaret Brennan, the woman who hosts CBS News' Sunday morning program, Face the Nation, decided to challenge Secretary of State Marco Rubio and the Trump administration by claiming (with a straight face) that one of the crimes of Hitler's Germany was "free speech."

She did this to criticize Vice President JD Vance's speech in Munich last week.

Watch:

This is, to be overly generous to Brennan, incredibly ignorant. The American people's working knowledge of 20th-century history may not be great, but I'd venture to say that most people are aware that the Nazi regime didn't exactly promote dissenting opinion.

Even a modicum of research by Brennan personally, or any of her bevy of writers, researchers, and staff historians would have revealed at least some of these well-known facts:

  • It became illegal to criticize the Nazi government in Germany beginning in 1934.

  • Telling jokes about Hitler became synonymous with treason.

  • Newspapers that were considered anti-Nazi were shuttered.

  • The German government exercised control over the stories that were reported in papers, on radio, and in newsreels.

  • Books that were considered "un-German" were banned or burned.

  • Soldiers who wrote home had their letters screened, and if necessary, edited.

It makes you wonder what could have possessed this kind of buffoonery on the part of such an accomplished journalist.

It's possible that Brennan is vacuous and dim. But I don't think that's the case. No, I think the explanation is something that I wrote about a few weeks ago. After a four-year commitment to colluding and participating with the Democrat Party to deceive the American public about the mental, physical, and intellectual competence of the sitting president, the legacy media is now reviving their charade of being government watchdogs intent on holding the powerful to account.

I say charade because it isn't really about speaking truth to power. It's about speaking opposition to Republicans, no matter how incredible the arguments are, or how inane and insane they sound.

And on that front, Margaret Brennan has set a bar that will be tough for anyone in her field to match.
