Yo, there's kidney stones, and then there's this behemoth right here:
Okay, I have to admit, I've never measured the weight of, well, anything, in hamsters. That's new to me and it's sort of distracted me from the fact that this Sri Lankan soldier had a kidney stone the size of a flippin' GRAPEFRUIT inside his body.
Here are some actual measurements for ya:
At 13.372 centimeters (5.26 inches) long and weighing 801 grams (1.76 lbs) the kidney stone broke two world records when it was removed by Sri Lankan Army doctors on June 1.
So that's not only the world's largest kidney stone, it's also the heaviest.
And dude, the stone was bigger than this guy's kidney itself!
Like, what happens to the kidney after this? Is it still intact? So many questions.
Kidney stones consist of solid pieces of material that crystallize in the kidney, ureters or bladder due to genetic and environmental factorsβ¦
Most types can be prevented by staying hydrated and reducing sodium intake. According to the Mayo Clinic, drinking as much as 2 to 3 quarts (1.89 to 2.8 liters) of water per day can help remove small stones β less than 3 millimeters (0.11 inches) in diameter β by flushing out the urinary system.
However, the process is notoriously painful.
Stones above 3 millimeters in diameter often require more extensive treatment such as surgery to remove them.
Yeah, I'd say this grapefruit-size kidney stone definitely falls into the second category.
Look at that thing:
Like, how many Mountain Dews do you think it took to create that behemoth?
So gross.
But yet so incredibly gnarly!
This might be the grossest Guinness World Record I've come across.
If you know of one nastier than this, please let me know in the comments.
