With multiple wildfires still burning throughout the greater Los Angeles area, reports emerged that gangs of looters had begun sweeping through vacant neighborhoods to plunder the empty houses.
According to the L.A. County Sheriff's Department, 20 individuals were later arrested for looting houses that had been evacuated due to the ongoing fires.
'Twenty individuals chose to go into our areas and deprive these poor people who have been through so much of their property,' L.A. County Sheriff Robert Luna told reporters at a morning news conference.
Authorities have issued mandatory evacuation orders for some 300,000 residents, creating a situation in which homes and places of business are empty and ripe for looters. Social media users pointed out that it takes a special brand of evil to take advantage of a crisis in such a way:
