The image is seared into my mind: Sherrone Moore, who just 72 hours earlier was a married father of three earning $5 million per year as head football coach at the historic University of Michigan, sitting behind bars.

A leader.

A husband.

A father.

A man whose life had inspired admiration and demanded respect. Now, confined - externally by iron bars, internally by the weight of his own poor decisions. The speed of his collapse was jarring. In just a matter of days, everything that seemed secure vanished.

Some context:

Sin promises freedom, but delivers captivity.

We like to think we are in control:

  • "I can handle this."

  • "I deserve this."

  • "I am free to choose my own way."

Sin whispers these lies and we believe them. We chase what looks like liberty, excitement, or personal satisfaction, only to find ourselves trapped by humiliating consequences we could never fully anticipate. One moment we are a confident leader; the next exposed, reduced to an object of public mockery and ridicule in memes like this:

The Apostle Paul reminds us, "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 6:23). Moore's situation is a real-world, unmistakable demonstration of that very truth. What felt like freedom in the moment, independently crossing boundaries God had established, became shame and captivity.

God's commands are not arbitrary rules meant to deprive us. They are protective boundaries, guiding us to a life of wholeness and blessing. They are designed to prevent the very devastation we see in the life of Coach Sherrone Moore. When we reject His rules, we don't step into power or liberation. We step into a lie; a false liberty that leads straight to harm, pain, and, ultimately, loss.

The choices that seemed harmless or justified in the moment leave a trail of brokenness behind them.

While Moore's fall may generate the most headlines, we cannot forget those affected alongside him. The woman involved is also caught in the consequences of sin. Scripture tells us to do less finger-wagging and more praying for repentance and restoration. Her life, like Moore's, has been reshaped by choices that promised pleasure and happiness, but delivered embarrassment and pain.

Even more, we must lift up Moore's wife and children in prayer. They are the truly innocent victims in all of this mess. In the midst of tragedy and public scrutiny, they need the prayers of the Church.

Moore's image behind bars is a cautionary snapshot for all of us; a visual sermon on the dangers of ignoring God's guidance.

Sherrone Moore's story is heartbreaking. Every time I think of it or am reminded of it, I get a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach. It is a public fall from influence to imprisonment in less than three days and a vivid lesson in the reality of sin that leaves me asking, "Where am I chasing freedom in ways that God never intended?

Sin promises so much. And yet, as Moore's depressing arraignment photo shows, it never delivers what it claims. Only God's wisdom and His commands guide us into real freedom.

Remember: Freedom and healing are never beyond reach. Even in the darkest moment, God offers forgiveness. Turn to Him.

'For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.' - John 3:16
