Apparently Katie Couric, the left-wing activist and former Today Show host still has an online program where she conducts interviews and produces progressive news content. Who knew?
Demonstrating her illustrious flare for originality and creativity, the topic of Couric's most recent episode was how awful Donald Trump is for America. Drawing from a deep well of self-proclaimed conservative Republicans who decided the best way to conserve conservatism and fight for conservative values was to raise money for Democrats and help them gain power, Couric brought on former Rep. Adam Kinzinger.
When their conversation turned to Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge Hannah Dugan, who stands accused of helping an illegal immigrant evade arrest, the former lawmaker put his commitment to the rule of law on full display:
He was unaware it was illegal to hide lawbreakers? He didn't know aiding and abetting fugitives was against the law? That strains credulity well past the breaking point. One commenter demonstrated the absurdity of his argument:
Feigning ignorance of the law is bad enough for a former lawmaker. And proclaiming, "I don't know all the details, BUT…" before drawing conclusions is not the conduct of the wise or prudent. But the worst part is when you realize that Kinzinger's entire anti-Trump schtick, by which he has gotten very wealthy these last few years, is predicated around his supposed allegiance to the rule of law.
Kinzinger got drunk on the fame he gained for his participation in the select congressional committee that "investigated" the January 6th riot at the Capitol. Few gigs paid (or pay) better than being a Republican willing to trash Trump and the MAGA movement. So Kinzinger branded his anti-Trump crusade a campaign for "democracy" and the "rule of law."
He groused about it on talk shows, grumbled about it in op-eds, and thundered its virtues from the floor of the Democratic National Convention in 2024. And then he accepted a pre-emptive pardon from outgoing President Joe Biden for crimes he may have committed while participating in various anti-Trump efforts.
While that might have been the first indication that Mr. Kinzinger's "rule of law" commitment was weaker than advertised, his Couric appearance removes any doubt about the shallowness of his dedication.
Principled opposition to Donald Trump, when merited, is noble. Accountability for politicians of any party is appropriate. Skepticism of those who wield extraordinary power over our lives is warranted. But what Kinzinger is doing here is none of those things.
Fighting against the rule of law just because the guy who is enforcing it is your personal obsession reveals a jarring immaturity and debilitating delusion. For his own sake, as well as ours, Adam Kinzinger needs to put some distance between himself and the public eye. And for good measure, Katie Couric could do that too.
