One of the great lies of our age is that the Bible is somehow too distant, too ancient, to speak to the urgencies of today. And while Christians should know better, we are still tempted to reach first for worldly arguments, strategies, and assurances — because they feel more immediate, more tangible, more "real."

But in the aftermath of Charlie Kirk's assassination - a moment charged with anger, grief, and fear - we must resist that temptation. Our first counsel cannot come from the pundits or the platforms, but from the Word of God. It is there, not in the noise of the world, that we find the clarity, the perspective, and the courage we need.

Psalm 46 speaks with a timeless voice into moments like this, offering the kind of unshakable wisdom and reassurance that no headline or political argument ever could.

"God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble." - Psalm 46:1

This is where we start … not with headlines, not with politics, but with God Himself. The psalm reminds us that in moments of trouble, our first instinct must be to run to Him. As our refuge, He is not just a place to hide but a place to find strength. Moreover, far from abandoning us, He was there in that awful moment, He is here in our grief, and He will still be here tomorrow.

"Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea…" - Psalm 46:2 - 3

It's so important to notice that the psalmist doesn't deny that the earth might give way, only that we need not fear when it does. In the aftermath of such horrific violence, it feels as though the very ground beneath us is crumbling. Beyond the brazen murder itself, the gaslighting, misdirection, and macabre celebrations emanating from the political left invites despondency. But fear is not our inheritance. Fear enslaves, but Christ has freed us. If our confidence rests in Him, the One that James tells us will not change like shifting shadows, we will not be shaken.

"Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts." - Psalm 46:6

The world is loud right now — angry voices, vengeful voices, mocking voices. But there is a louder voice that will have the last word. God is not silent, and one word from Him can melt away all the bluster of evil. That means we don't have to retaliate in rage. We don't have to join the cycle of vengeance. We can wait patiently for His justice, trusting that it will come — and it will be perfect.

"Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth." - Psalm 46:10

This might be the hardest command in the entire psalm. Everything in us wants to act, react, lash out, or maybe even retreat to safety, but God calls us to stillness. Don't misunderstand, this doesn't mean we are called to passivity, but rather a settled, steadfast, grounded peace. To be still is to rest in the certainty that He is God and we are not, that He will be exalted, that evil will not win, that violence will not have the last word. The cross has already proven that God does His best work in what appears to us as the darkest hour.

"The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress." - Psalm 46:11

It's one of the most powerful ends to a passage of Scripture you could imagine; it's a refrain that bears repeating in the echoes of our mind over and over. The Lord is with us. He was with Charlie Kirk as he breathed his last. He is with Kirk's family in their grief. He is with us right now as we process our sorrow, confusion, and even anger. And He will still be with us tomorrow, and the next day, until Christ returns.

So let the nations rage, let the kingdoms totter. The Lord Almighty is with us. And because He is, we can face even this moment without fear.
