New York officials alert residents of earthquake 1 hour after earthquake happened

The northeastern US was hit this morning by an earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale (which is mild) that originated near Lebanon, New Jersey.

Officials in New York were quick to demonstrate government efficiency by alerting residents an hour after the quake had passed.

Folks in NYC and Philadelphia felt the quake interrupt their workday.

The earthquake was centered near Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Reports of injuries were not immediately clear.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said the quake was felt throughout New York.

"My team is assessing impacts and any damage that may have occurred, and we will update the public throughout the day," she wrote on social media.

Expect that full update to drop sometime before the end of 2026!
