Huge Great White Shark Decapitates Diver in Year's First Fatal Shark Attack

A massive great white shark reportedly attacked and decapitated Manuel Lopez, a 53-year-old diver in Tobari Bay, Mexico. The gruesome attack occurred on January 5th and marks the first fatal shark attack of the year.

According to witnesses, Lopez had been diving for ax tripe, a type of mollusk, and was using surface air supplied by hoses from a boat, diving to depths of as much as 59 feet underwater, when he was attacked by a 19-foot great white that bit his head clean off.

The average female great white is 15-16 feet long, while males reach 11-13 feet. This was a huge shark.

Local divers had reportedly been warned about the presence of sharks in the area and had avoided it for several days, but the seafood shortage in the area led Lopez to take the risk and continue diving.

This isn't the first time a fatal shark attack has occurred in this area. In February 2022, a 56-year-old diver was killed by a great white shark while diving for scallops, and in December 2018, a 35-year-old man was killed by a shark in the Gulf of California.

Tragic reminders of the dangers of the sea.
