Don't forget that even in the rural South, almost all of the education industry is very much woke:
A 16-year-old student at Central Davidson High School in Lexington, North Carolina was suspended for three days last week after using the term ‘illegal alien' during a vocabulary assignment in his English class.
The young man was reportedly working on an assignment that included the word "alien." He "made an effort to understand the assignment and responded to his teacher, asking, 'Like space aliens or illegal aliens without green cards?'"
Which, you know:
I mean the kid is seeking to make sure he gets the assignment right! You don't penalize a student for that!
But boy, did they:
According to an email describing the incident, sent to local officials and shared with Carolina Journal, a young man in class took offense to his question and reportedly threatened to fight him, prompting the teacher to call in the assistant principal. Ultimately, his words were deemed by administrative staff to be offensive and disrespectful to classmates who are Hispanic.
Ummmmm...
Not sure why the young man's Hispanic classmates would be automatically offensive at simply hearing the term "illegal alien." That's an actual, real term that refers to a real legal designation. Is that what we get offended by these days — legal terms?
A state senator has informed the district superintendent of the matter and has urged officials to investigate the situation to figure out just what happened.
You'd think with all the negative publicity, the school would back down, but it looks like they're holding fast — so much so, anyway, that the family has had to engage an attorney:
[The boy's mother] said the assistant principal has so far refused to remove the infraction from her son's record. The family is working with an attorney to remedy the situation so it doesn't harm his future, and they expect more developments in the days ahead.
We'll keep an eye on this one for you and update when we know more.
