A video gamer managed to trick White House press into asking Jen Psaki questions for WEEKS before someone figured it out ๐Ÿ˜‚

This is troll level 100, my friends. A user from the online Roblox video game platform managed to infiltrate the White House press pool and feed them questions to ask the Biden administration on a variety of topics:

A Roblox user with the alias "Kacey Montagu" managed to literally trick real reporters into believing he or she was part of a valid news outlet. The scam started in the Roblox world, where there is a role-playing group called "nUSA" that does mock government exercises (the things kids do these days).

"Kacey" was reportedly the fake Secretary of State in the group at one point, but decided to bring the role playing into the real world:

  • Kacey created a LinkedIn account and two Twitter handles (@WHSchedule and @WHPoolReport) and a fake news organization called White House News (WHN).
  • Kacey then managed to get hundreds of people โ€“ including top-level reporters at multiple news agencies โ€“ to follow his/her account.
  • The scammer also filed a Freedom of Information Act request and obtained for the financial disclosure forms of White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki and National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan.
  • Kacey then messaged members of the White House Press corps, posing as a fellow member who writes for The Daily Mail in the U.K. Kacey would pass them requests for questions that they could then ask Psaki.
  • The prankster also managed to email questions to the press aides for Joe Biden, Jill Biden, and Kamala Harris, and built rapport with reporters by congratulating them on promotions and new opportunities.

The press bought the scam and asked Psaki FOUR of Kacey's questions over several weeks.

You may have heard this question about Obama last week from Washington Blade reporter Chris Johnson:

"How involved is former President Obama and First Lady Obama in the Biden โ€“ Harris administration?"

It was accompanied by a separate question:

"Is President Biden seeking to bring back the often bipartisan portrait unveiling events at the White House?"

Here was Psaki answering both questions, which were asked on behalf of (you guessed it) Kacey:

Politico managed to contact the anonymous individual, reportedly a political science student who was born in America but lives in the U.K.

"I love journalism, and I think the Press Corps is doing a pretty bad job at the moment, so I decided I would ensure some transparency and ask some questions me and some friends wanted the answer to."

Translation: America media is a disingenuous partisan joke and a student just proved it through trollery.

Here's what one of Kacey's online gamer friends from nUSA had to say:

"Another longtime member of the community in touch with Montagu said they suspected that they created the account 'just for the memes' and never assumed things would progress this far. The member said they decided to speak out, in part, to help expose how stunningly easy it is for someone with no apparent media credentials or journalism experience to burrow into the loftiest ranks of the industry and government."

Good job, gamers!
