Here's an update on how the "reimagining" of criminal punishment is going:

Secret Service agents assigned to Naomi Biden, the 29-year-old granddaughter of the president, opened fire on three thieves who smashed the window of an unmarked Secret Service SUV. The president's granddaughter was out shopping in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, DC, late Sunday night when the incident occurred.

The group was caught breaking a window of the SUV, prompting one agent to open fire.

No one was shot and the group quickly fled in a red car, the Secret Service said in a statement.

The agency put out a regional bulletin to the police to be on the lookout for the suspects' vehicle.

There have been more than 6,000 stolen vehicles this year, including 750 carjackings.

Several weeks ago, a 13-year-old boy was fatally shot when he tried to steal the vehicle of an armed federal officer.

Several weeks before that, a sitting US congressman was carjacked outside the official dormitories that our representatives use to live when they are away from home. When covering that story, we noted that 173 House Democrats voted this year against increasing the penalties for carjacking in DC.

Meanwhile, Americans are busy leaving comments like this on the internet:
