Over the last few days, Kai Cenat, one of the most popular streamers on the video game streaming website Twitch, announced that he would give away PlayStation 5 video game consoles at 4 p.m. in [New York City's] Union Square.
Thousands of people showed up and took over the park and the roads bordering it as police struggled to contain them.
The scene was pretty much chaos:
One police witness said he "observed young people walking out…bleeding from their heads, bleeding from on their faces" and that he also saw "young people having panic attacks, anxiety attacks, asthma attacks."
Police reportedly "took dozens into custody," including Kai Cenat himself. The streamer may reportedly be charged with inciting a riot.
"It was a lot of people, it was uncontrolled, it took us awhile to get it under control," Police Chief of Department Jeffrey Madrey told media.
"A lot of young people got hurt," he added.
