Another 48 hours in Chicago, another few dozen people shot

Chicago has long held a reputation for being completely wrecked by constant, relentless gun violence.

I am sorry to report that it continues to earn that distinction:

At least three people were killed, and 27 others were hurt in weekend shootings in Chicago as of Sunday. The ages of the victims range from 14 to 86.

Folks, you know it's miserably bad when your local news network prints a shooting victim list like this:

The list of injuries, meanwhile, reads like a brutal anatomy textbook: "gunshot wound to the right arm," "gunshot wound to the chest," "gunshot wounds to the left foot and right arm," "gunshot wounds to the abdomen and chest."

Obviously, this isn't just a function of gang-on-gang violence. Innocent people are regularly dying in crossfires. In one case, an 86-year-old man โ€” the venerable old "patriarch" of his block โ€” was shot and killed outside his home where he'd lived for the past 60 years. As one neighbor soberly observed of his death:

"It was nothing none of us could've done."

Police and city leaders, of course, could do something: They could clamp down on this insane crime wave and start saving lives. Their priorities seem to lay elsewhere, however, which is why "30 shot in one weekend" is an unsurprising headline to read about Chicago these days.
