Early this morning, a BNSF Railway train carrying mixed freight including ethanol derailed in Raymond, Minnesota, and burst into flames. Twenty-two cars derailed, forcing a half-mile evacuation radius to be put in place by the Kandiyohi County Sheriff's Office.
"Fire departments from Raymond and numerous area departments responded as several of the derailed tankers started on fire and were determined to be carrying a form of ethanol and others with a corn syrup liquid," the Kandiyohi County Sheriff's Office said.
"An evacuation area of ½ mile was established around the crash site and law enforcement officers and other EMS assisted with that evacuation. Residents were instructed to leave their homes and an emergency collection site for those with nowhere to go was established at the Central Minnesota Christian School building in nearby Prinsburg, Minnesota."
The cause of the derailment is currently being investigated by BNSF. The railroad company has stated that it will be working closely with local first responders, but that there is no predicted timeline for the reopening of the line.
Those within the designated evacuation area were instructed to vacate their homes, while others with nowhere to go were sent to a nearby school for shelter. The Raymond Fire Department has stated that the evacuation was done as a precautionary measure.
U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg confirmed via Twitter that the Federal Railroad Administration is investigating the incident. At this time, there have been no reports of injuries or fatalities. The fire at the derailment site is under control, and members of the public are being advised against traveling to Raymond.
Raymond has a population of around 780.
I guess this is just an everyday thing in America now.
