Bad stuff out of Mexico last week after Hurricane Otis passed through Acapulco:
Predictably, the disaster has brought out some of the worst criminal elements in the region, with widespread looting.
But residents there aren't taking it lying down:
Armed with machetes and baseball bats, some residents of Mexico's hurricane-ravaged beachside city of Acapulco are guarding their neighborhoods from looters who have already emptied supermarkets.
In the Progreso district, locals have used metal roof panels and other debris left by Hurricane Otis to block the entrances to streets.
After night falls, "people make barricades to prevent people from coming through. They use what's lying on the street," Salvador Chavez, a resident of the area, told AFP on Tuesday.
Authorities are "still working to fully restore power across the city," which used to be a playground for the U.S. elite but which, like much of Mexico, has suffered in recent years due to cartel violence.
Some property owners "have deployed armed guards to prevent robberies," AFP notes, while soldiers have been dispatched to maintain order in other sectors.
The death toll this week stood at nearly 50, according to media reports.
