Move over, murder hornets! There's a new arthropod in town!
Get ready to meet "Brood X" – a mega swarm of cicadas set to crawl their way out of the ground and descend upon unsuspecting cities.
The 100-decibel shrieks of said swarm is going to be cray cray.
Cicadas spend years underground as larvae – in the case of Brood X, 17 years – before coming to the surface to mate and lay eggs.
Here's a 2004 report from the last time Brood X emerged:
Here's where the swarms will be present: Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington D.C.
The good news is that if Biden has crashed the economy by then, cicadas are an excellent food source. The National Wildlife Federation says they taste like "canned asparagus" and National Geographic even has some recipes!
