New York Attorney General Letitia James might be regretting her life choices right about now.

You may recall this wild scene from 2023 where Judge Arthur F. Engoron of New York's Supreme Court 1st District gleefully preened in front of the cameras as AG James glared at Trump, sure she was about to take him down for allegedly overvaluing his New York properties.

AG James, who ran specifically on the platform of attacking Donald Trump, celebrated a win in the civil mortgage-fraud trial, especially after Engoron ordered Trump to pay over $364 million plus interest, which has ballooned to $527 million.

James gloated over the victory, saying she would seize Trump's New York assets if he didn't pony up the money.

Trump appealed, arguing the ruling violated the Eighth Amendment's protection from excessive fines and unusual punishments.

On Thursday, a New York appellate court agreed.

From CBS News:

One of the justices on the Appellate Division, First Judicial Department wrote that the penalty, known as a disgorgement, against Mr. Trump, two of his sons and other executives and their company was 'an excessive fine barred by the Eighth Amendment.'

... The majority concluded on Thursday that the penalty 'was far from a reasonable approximation,' as one of the justices wrote.

AG James can appeal the decision, but she has legal troubles of her own.
