When was the last time a Coast Guard security officer's service weapon was used in a firefight??

Or, in this case, a ... U-Haul fight?

In a statement, the U.S. Coast Guard said this:

At approximately 10:00 p.m. (PDT) on Thursday, Coast Guard security personnel standing watch on Coast Guard Island observed a vehicle driving erratically and attempting to weaponize the vehicle to ram into Coast Guard Base Alameda.

U.S. Coast Guard personnel issued multiple verbal commands to stop the vehicle, the driver failed to comply and proceeded to put the vehicle in reverse — suddenly accelerating backwards at a high rate of speed directly toward them. When the vehicle's actions posed a direct threat to the safety of Coast Guard and security personnel, law enforcement officers discharged several rounds of defensive live fire.

Two civilians were injured in the brouhaha, but "are expected to survive." The first was the truck driver, who was "wounded in the stomach" and is being held for mental health evaluation.

I'm glad to hear that, because the man was wearing a medical mask while driving and clearly needs help (I suppose trying to storm a Coast Guard base was a bad idea too).

The second person injured was a bystander that got hit by a bullet and/or debris fragment.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is the lead agency for this investigation, and we are coordinating with our law enforcement partners.

I know Gavin Newsom is the U-Haul Salesman of the Decade, but if you're trying to flee California, best to avoid heavily-guarded military bases?

Thank you for your service, Coast Guard 🫡
