Tina Turner, the iconic music star whose career spanned decades and whose songs remain embedded in mainstream culture, died on Wednesday at 83.
Turner died at her home near Zurich, Switzerland, after a long illness, her family said.
Hailed as "the Queen of Rock & Roll," Turner's hits include "What's Love Got to Do With It," "Proud Mary," and "The Best," among others.
She was known for her tumultuous relationship with her husband, Ike Turner, whom she claimed abused her on a regular basis. They divorced in 1978 and he died in 2007.
Turner had retired in 2009.
