California bans Flamin’ Hot Cheetos in schools. How long will people put up with this insanity?

California is not just running its citizens out of the state; now they're running Chester Cheetah out too, at least his Flamin' Hot Cheetos anyway.

In a move reminiscent of Denmark's short-lived ban on hot ramen, the California legislature just passed a law forbidding Flamin' Hot Cheetos, Twinkies, and other such snacks from school cafeterias.

Their reason?

'California has a responsibility to protect our students from chemicals that harm children and interfere with their ability to learn,' Democratic Assemblymember (sic) Jesse Gabriel, the author of the bill, said in a statement. 'As a lawmaker, a parent, and someone who struggled with ADHD, I find it unacceptable that we allow schools to serve foods with additives that are linked to hyperactivity and neurobehavioral harms.'

What ingredient is the Assembly Member referring to?

Red dye 40 has been linked in a few small studies to ADHD, though there's nothing official. Even the FDA has called the evidence scarce, though they figure some kids probably have some kind of sensitivity to the dye.

'It's unfortunate that scientifically proven, safe ingredients have been demonized for the purpose of advancing a political agenda,' John Hewitt of the Consumer Brands Association said in a statement. 'The passage of this bill could cost schools and families money, limit choice and access, and create consumer confusion.'

It it just me, or does California have to suck the joy out of everything?

What's wrong with a child experiencing the utter bliss of shoving so many neon-red, solar-flare infused cheese puffs in their mouth that their eyeballs melt?

Honestly, I can't see how that would be distracting at all.

If Governor Gavin "Gruesome" Newsom signs the bill, it will hang alongside the banning of Peeps and Skittles in some future museum display showcasing the great Californian-children uprising of the 21 century.

Seriously, what the heck, California?
