California passes law allowing citizens to toke up in "cannabis cafes"
· Oct 2, 2024 · NottheBee.com

California stoners, I have some great news for you: Starting January 1, you'll be able to toke up in what are being called Dutch-style "cannabis cafes."

I'm a little worried — and so are health officials — about the second-hand smoke here. Unlike the health officials, however, I'm not thinking about the lung health of the staff at these smoke-filled establishments; I'm worried that my waitress will be high as a kite and forget my order entirely, eat a slice of my pizza, and leave me a bill with several items I never received nor ordered.

These employees are going to be high as a kite! California, y'all never heard of the hotbox?

On Monday, the Golden State legalized cannabis lounges where customers will be able to buy the drug, then stick around for a meal or a live show …

Matt Haney, the San Francisco-based Assemblymember who sponsored AB 374, announced Monday morning that California Gov. Gavin Newsom had signed the legislation into law.

‘Lots of people want to enjoy legal cannabis in the company of others,' Haney said Monday in a news release, ‘and many people want to do that while sipping coffee, eating a sandwich or listening to music. That is now finally legal in California, and there's no doubt that cannabis cafes will bring massive economic, cultural and creative opportunities and benefits to our state. California is once again leading the way in supporting legal, safe cannabis businesses and culture.'

Ah, yes: "Massive economic, cultural and creative opportunities" are what people think of when they think of potheads!

The law will go into effect Jan. 1, 2025, pending approvals from local governments …

Under AB 1775, cannabis cafes will be able to sell non-cannabis-infused food and non-alcoholic drinks, and also host live music.

Yeah, there will be no alcohol served at these cannabis cafes. So if you get too high to be in public, I guess you'll have to walk next door to a bar for a drink.

Marijuana does remain a schedule 1 controlled substance federally, but California doesn't care!
