Peak to Peak Mountain Charter School teacher Elaine Salmon was preparing for the back-to-school season in southern California when she opened the door to find a bear rummaging through her classroom.
Yes, her name is literally Salmon.
Salmon said,
I opened my classroom door and this bear was charging towards the door.
Salmon said that she quickly shut and locked the door, then immediately called her husband for backup.
When asked why she called her husband instead of the authorities, she told KVUE News,
Well, because, he's my man, you know.
As expected, her husband, Ian, a retired police officer, quickly came to her rescue.
Once he arrived, the couple began banging on the window to get the bear's attention. Ian was then able to open the door for the bear to make his escape into the nearby woods, while Elaine hid behind a fence until the bear was out of sight.
We can speculate about why the bear chose her classroom, but I suspect he read the name "Salmon" on the door and got excited.
The only damage the bear caused was to the classroom's earthquake kit, from which he helped himself to some non-perishable snacks.
While bears are not uncommon in the Bakersfield area, the school says the only bear they usually have on campus is their school mascot.
The school went on to say they will be investing in some more bear-resistant door handles for the upcoming school year to prevent this situation from happening again.
