California’s vegan-only restaurants are being forced to put meat back on the menu or go out of business

So many restaurants tried to go the vegan-only route over the last few years, but it turns out that even in Commie-fornia, the people really, really like their animal products.

One popular chain, Burgerlords in Los Angeles, nearly put themselves out of business by going all vegan in 2020.

"The landscape was much different when we opened eight years ago," says co-owner Frederick Guerrero.

"My brother Max [then a partner in the restaurant] and I were scared to open an all-vegan restaurant. When COVID hit, we said, ‘Screw it,' and decided that it was time."

But with only 1% of the United States population identifying as vegan, it turns out there's not a lot of profit in serving just veggie patties.

After a lot of other vegetarian and vegan restaurants closed around them, they decided it was time to put meat back on the menu.

"We felt like we had to open the restaurant up to more people, but we also saw a lot of vegan restaurants throwing in the towel," Guerrero adds.

They're not the only ones bringing meat back; Margo's Pizza in Santa Monica also decided serving meat was better than closing down.

More and more vegans and vegetarians are becoming "social omnivores", meaning they'll eat meat and meat products in social circumstances while staying vegan and vegetarian at home.

So much for the U.N.'s plans on asking Americans to limit meat consumption.
