College student offers free masks and gloves "FOR MINORITIES ONLY!! $10 PER ITEM for White People!!" to prove systemic racism or whatever

There's a lot to unpack here:

MeAnna Durham, a senior graphic design major at Michigan State University, created a sign for an assignment "on tactical media in her experimental design practices class," MLive reports.

The sign said: "Free masks and gloves for MINORITIES ONLY!! $10 PER ITEM for White People!!"

Durham said she wanted "white people to see how their privilege is working." It should be no surprise that the sign caused quite a ruckus when she posted it on campus on Oct. 26.

"I was expecting a reaction out of people, I just didn't expect this much of a reaction," Durham said.

The sign is one of Durham's individual contributions to a group project that intends to "demonstrate how minorities have been negatively impacted during the COVID-19 pandemic compared to other groups" and that "the point of the sign was to reverse that experience."

Here's how the MSU community received it, according to MLive:

That same day she set up on campus, Durham made a tweet on her Twitter account to spread the word about what she was doing to other MSU students. She was almost immediately met with an influx of comments, both applauding and opposing the idea."

She said there was a stark contrast between the reactions she received in-person versus online.

Besides a few side glances from angry bystanders, Durham said some of the people that approached her table calling her display "racist." Once she was able to explain it was for a class project and the purpose behind it, she said those who were initially hostile left with a better understanding of what she was trying to convey.

'They weren't as upset as they were when they initially came up to the table,' Durham said.

Of the roughly 50 people who walked by within the hour timeframe that she was there, she counted four people who actually approached her. No one gave her $10 and she said she didn't plan on accepting it if someone offered.

...

Online, she's received a number of comments saying her display was "reverse-racism." She also said she's received threats and personal insults directed at her.

...

She has however received a positive response from people of color who appreciate her making a point about systemic racism. Some have even offered to help with any needs she may have regarding her safety.

She said the only people who are outraged are deliberately missing the point.

I don't think people are deliberately missing the point. That assumes that there even is a point being made.

Let's say, for the sake of argument, that minorities have been disproportionately impacted by COVID-19... I'm not sure I understand how this sign proves anything or "reverse[s] the experience." Do minorities have to pay $10 for masks and gloves while white people receive them for free? I really don't get it.

Durham seems to think she totally proved a point, though...

"How can you be so blind and so dense that you don't see the roles are already reversed?" Durham said. "If it was a white girl with the same sign, people would probably love it and label it as charity."

"I'm not going to keep arguing with these people or even trying to explain my side. At this point it's like, you're not going to change your opinions."

LOL! Are you kidding me?!

If a college white girl had a sign that said "Free stuff for white people only!! $10 for minorities!!" then she would be expelled from her school that very day, and I still don't understand how this proves anything.

I need one of the Libs of TikTok to make an explanation video on this sign. That would help immensely. Without that, I have no clue what I'm supposed to do with this sign.
