Completely unexpected: Even after world leaders pathetically begged the Taliban to promote gender equality, Afghanistan now requires head-to-toe coverings for women in public

You may recall that last year, government leaders around the world plaintively pleaded with the Taliban to be super-inclusive and respectful toward women in its newfound administration of the Afghani government:

Well, all that begging sure paid off!

Oh wait, no, it absolutely did not:

The Taliban government decreed Saturday that Afghan women must cover themselves from head to toe, expanding a series of onerous restrictions on women that dictate nearly every aspect of public life.

The decree, by the Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, drew condemnation from women's rights advocates and the United Nations, which described it as another bald betrayal of Taliban pledges to respect gender equality.

The ministry suggested the burqa as the preferred garment for covering a woman's face, hair and body. But it did not mandate wearing the garment as long as women otherwise cover themselves with a hijab.

Ahhh. So actually, we learn that women have a lot of choice in Afghanistan: They can cover themselves from head-to-toe with a burqa... or they can do it with the help of a hijab.

It's a feminist paradise over there!

Thank goodness, though, that the international feminist community is speaking out in one unified and unequivocal voice against this obvious and significant setback in women's rights in a major Middle Eastern country, right?

Right?

Ah well, at least we only expended countless American lives and spent unthinkable sums of money in that country for two long decades. If we'd put any more work into it, this development would be a real downer!
